CASE STUDY

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade & Cooperation VNR Report 2025

Sector: Government – International Development & Diplomacy

The Challenge: In 2025, Suriname was scheduled to present its second Voluntary National Review (VNR) at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York. This report would highlight the country’s progress on key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including health and well-being (SDG 3), gender equality (SDG 5), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), life below water (SDG 14), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade & Cooperation entrusted Thrive Design Studio with the task of transforming complex national progress data into a clear, compelling, and visually engaging report that could stand out on a global stage.

OUR APPROACH

Thrive Design Studio approached the project with a design-thinking methodology, combining aesthetics, clarity, and strategy.

  • Visual Identity & Color Strategy
We developed a cohesive color system inspired by Suriname’s natural environment—its rivers, forests, and coastline—while ensuring alignment with the global SDG color palette. This balance created a design that was both distinctly Surinamese and globally recognizable.

  • Icons & Infographics
To translate technical data into digestible insights, we created a custom suite of icons and infographics. These visuals simplified statistics on healthcare improvements, gender equality initiatives, job creation, and ocean preservation, ensuring accessibility for both experts and general audiences.

  • Graphs & Data Visualization
We designed dynamic graphs and charts to highlight trends in healthcare, employment, and climate resilience. These were strategically placed to support key interventions and ensure data was evidence-driven yet visually engaging.

  • Layout & Narrative Flow
The report was structured with a reader-first layout, guiding audiences through Suriname’s achievements, challenges, and commitments in a logical and inspiring way. Ample white space, modern typography, and visual rhythm created a publication that was both authoritative and approachable.

The Result

The VNR Report 2025 was presented on 22 July 2025 at the United Nations in New York. It became a cornerstone of Suriname’s international narrative, demonstrating the nation’s progress and resilience in achieving the SDGs.

  • High-Level Impact: The report supported Suriname’s interventions at the HLPF, where the delegation emphasized commitments to health, gender equality, decent work, and ocean protection.

  • Global Recognition: By aligning design with UN SDG standards, the report positioned Suriname as a serious and credible actor among Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

  • Diplomatic Value: The polished presentation strengthened Suriname’s ability to advocate for fair financing, partnerships, and resilience measures at the global level.
